Here is a new large painting from the Revolution. It is the battle of the Hook which took place near Gloucester , Pt , Virginia during the siege of Yorktown. The British Legion cavalry (Loyalists) under Lt Colonel Banastre Tarleton got the worst of an engagement with about 250 French Hussars and Lancers of Lauzun's Legion. At one point the Duc de Lauzun and Tarleton almost met in person combat but Tarleton's horse was upset by a Legion trooper being chased by a French Lancer. Needless to say there are of course, varying accounts of the entire engagement. The Legion based on several accounts appears to have been dressed in white linen jackets which makes sense during campaigning in Virginia heat. At this point the pencil sketch is on the canvas and fixed. The brown spot is where I'm just starting to apply an overall burnt sienna tone to the whole thing. With the very elaborate uniforms and horse equipage this will be a full 3-4 months on the easel.
