From the new book A private of Fremont's Body Guard , The Zagonyi Battalion 1861 . General Fremont's Body Guard consisted of several troops , each apparently in different uniforms . The most famous the Zagonyi Battalion, were clothed in plain black tight fitting uniforms . All the companies participated in their famous charge at the battle of Springfield Missouri . The Zagonyis were armed with Colt Dragoon revolvers with shoulder stocks and Remington Beals revolvers. They were mounted on dark bay horses

with Grimsley saddles.
