An older study of a Zouave of the 5th New York Veteran Volunteers in 1864. Zouave regiments did not completely die out during the war and the Federal government actually created new regiments or converted some regiments from the standard uniform if they wished it. The rule was the Zouave uniform could not cost more than the standard clothing. This was solved by using imported French cloth in stock or using previous Zouave clothing parts already on hand.
