A soldier of Lord Dunmore's Ethiopian Regiment 1775. Dunmore , governor of Virginia raised a unit of slaves who had escaped from their masters. They didn't see much action and many wound up in other units when this regiment was disbanded in 1776. Some wore British regimental coats of the 14th Regiment of Foot, part of which were in Virginia at the time. Others may have been dressed differently. Watercolor and gouache on paper.
